The social housing backlog in South Africa is estimated at over 2.2 million units, and this number is growing, not shrinking. Additionally, an estimated 1.3 million households do not qualify for subsidies, but nevertheless live in unsuitable or informal houses. While progress has certainly been made – the proportion of poor households living in formal dwellings increased from 47% in 1994 to 66% today, for example – the enormous scale of South Africa’s challenge is nonetheless clear.

Affordable Housing South Africa 2012 is our 2nd annual housing summit, following on from our enormously successful event in February, 2011.
